ONTOLOGY OF A LIVING ORGANISM
Last updated April 2024

This work explores the intersection of human history and the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus).

Whaling was once a key industry in the American Northeast as sperm whale oil was a prized commodity with many industrial applications. This exploitation scarred the whale population. Inspired by the visible scars on sperm whale skin, I used salvaged materials and embroidery techniques to illustrate repair and resilience. The piece serves as both a reflection on humanity's impact and a visual apology to whales through a literal mending of tears in fabric.
