Disaffected Youth Enamel Pin

I began conceptualizing this pin in 2021 to protest the Anti-Terrorism Act. The law’s definition of terrorism is broad and poorly defined and, if interpreted maliciously, could put community organizers, peasant advocates, student leaders, artists, academics, journalists, and others traditionally associated with the political “left” in danger of arrest and imprisonment.

The piece appears innocuous, but when the pin is removed, the message, “Dissent is not Terrorism,” is revealed. The backing card, which is typically discarded, serves only as a fleeting reminder to the viewer. There are no overt political references on the pin, so the complete message can only be understood when these two components are together or if the viewer has prior knowledge of this project.
